Who are the big 4 AI companies? OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Meta

Short answer: the big 4 AI companies are usually taken to be OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Meta. These are the firms that build the large language models behind the best-known AI products: GPT from OpenAI, Claude from Anthropic, Gemini from Google and Llama from Meta. There is no official list, and commentators do not always agree on the fourth name.

The four companies and their main models

  • OpenAI makes the GPT models behind ChatGPT. Reported valuation: about $852bn (May 2026).
  • Anthropic makes the Claude family of models. Reported valuation: about $965bn (May 2026).
  • Google makes the Gemini models through Google DeepMind and sells them through Google Cloud and its consumer products.
  • Meta develops the Llama models and Meta AI, and uses AI across its social platforms and advertising.

Valuations are the figures Al Jazeera reported on 17 September 2026. They are private-company estimates and change with each funding round.

Why the list is not fixed

The phrase is informal. In September 2025, ARK Invest chief Cathie Wood named OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI and Google as the big four, and left out Meta. Al Jazeera’s 2026 overview names OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, Google DeepMind and Meta AI as the leading frontier labs. So the same four names come up most often, but a list may swap in xAI, depending on who is ranking them.

The other meaning: the Big Four accounting firms

Some search results use “Big 4” for the four largest professional services firms: Deloitte, PwC, EY and KPMG. They advise businesses on AI and sell AI consulting and implementation, but they do not build the frontier models. If you are looking for a firm to help your business use AI, that list is the one you want. If you are asking which companies build the AI models, use the list above.
