AI Visibility Audit: Case Study

I built a free tool that shows businesses exactly how ChatGPT and Perplexity answer when asked to recommend someone like them, and gives them the fixes to appear in that answer.

A few months ago I noticed something changing in how people find businesses. They were not just Googling any more. They were asking ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity to recommend someone.

And when I tested it on my own clients, the results were not great. Good businesses, doing good work, simply were not coming up when AI assistants were asked for a recommendation. Something else was getting named instead.

That is why I built the AI Visibility Audit.

Why I built it

I run an AI consultancy. My job is to help small businesses use AI properly, not just talk about it. But most people I meet do not yet know that “being visible to AI” is even a thing they need to think about, let alone that I am the person who can help with it.

So I needed a way to show people the problem, not just tell them about it. Something they could try in a minute, that would hand them hard evidence, in their inbox, with their own website and their own name in it.

The AI Visibility Audit does exactly that. It is not a lead magnet dressed up as a tool. It is a genuinely useful diagnostic that happens to introduce people to what I do, at the exact moment they realise they might need it.

Why it is free (even though it costs me money)

Here is the bit that surprises people. Every single time someone runs the audit, it costs me real money.

The tool has to actually ask ChatGPT and Perplexity live questions about a business, check the site against fifty different signals, and generate a full report. That means API calls, and API calls are not free. I am paying, out of my own pocket, for every audit someone runs.

Almost every other tool doing something similar charges for it, usually somewhere between £5 and £40 a report. I decided to give mine away instead.

Why? Because the audit was never meant to be a product. It was meant to be a door. If someone gets real value from it for free, they trust me. And when they need someone to actually fix what the audit found, I am the obvious person to call.

It is a longer game than charging £15 a report, but it is a much better one.

What the tool actually does

You put in your website and your email. That is it. About a minute later, a full report lands in your inbox, and it is yours to keep.

Here is what is inside:

  • An AI visibility score out of 100, broken down across six categories
  • The actual, word-for-word answers ChatGPT and Perplexity gave when asked to recommend a business like yours
  • Which competitors got named instead of you
  • Your five highest-impact fixes, with the code already written and filled in from your own site, ready to copy and paste

That last part matters. It does not just tell you “improve your schema markup”. It writes the schema markup for your site and hands it to you.

How it helps in practice

Say you run a plumbing business in Cheltenham. Someone types into ChatGPT, “who’s a good plumber near Cheltenham”. The audit shows you, in black and white, what ChatGPT actually said back, and whether your name was in it.

If it was not, the report tells you why. Maybe your site has no clear service pages AI can read. Maybe there is no structured data telling it what you actually do, where, and for whom. Maybe your reviews live somewhere AI cannot see them.

Then it gives you the fixes, in order of impact, with the code done for you. Add a few of those and run the audit again in a month. Watch the score move, and watch whether your name starts appearing in the answers.

This is not theory. This is the same gap I was already checking for manually with consultancy clients, now packaged so anyone can run it themselves, for free, in about a minute.

Free, when everyone else charges

Most tools that do something similar sit behind a paywall, typically £5 to £40 per report, for results that are not meaningfully different to what you get here for nothing.

Mine is free. No sign-up beyond an email address, no card details, no upsell hidden three clicks in. Just a real report, built the same way I would build one for a paying client.

What happens after the report

Some people take the fixes, apply them themselves and get real movement. That is genuinely fine by me, and it is the whole point of making it free.

Others read the report, see how far behind their site actually is, and would rather have someone who does this for a living sort it properly, wired into the rest of their AI strategy rather than as a one-off fix.

If that is you, that is exactly what I do. If your audit throws up more than you want to tackle alone, or you simply want AI visibility built in as part of a wider system rather than a checklist, get in touch and we will talk about what that looks like for your business.
